WCFM The Sawyer Sessions – Lily Goldberg & Lizzie Ferguson

WCFM Williamstown is an FCC-licensed frequency-modulating station broadcasting on 91.9 MHz from the basement of Prospect House. Williams College radio has been around since 1941. It is the student-run voice of Williams College. WCFM programming is entirely free-form: DJs have complete control over their shows. They broadcast a beautiful mix of music, talk, and miscellaneous fun. February 22, 2019 | “Take it away–yeah, I just said take it away to myself.” Lily Goldberg and Lizzie Ferguson have a point of view and a sense of humor. After listening to this session, it’s hard to believe the duo are only freshman. (Seriously!!) “Wanting to be wanted by someone who wants me a little less” / “saying yes to you is always a fool’s compromise.” Like Snail Mail and Billie Eilish before them, Goldberg and Ferguson tell stories of love with maturity and sass. Influenced by a deep folk tradition (with Ferguson killing it on the fiddle/mandolin combo), the duo’s music fuses sultry vocals (Do I detect a twinge of Norah Jones?) and a garage rock vibe (Angel Olsen, etc.) to produce a country-funky aesthetic. Carried by a solid songwriting, the duo whipped out a 5-piece band to deliver its timeless message. -Ariella M.
