BOOM TV – The Matchstick Architects

The Matchstick Architects are a New England based indie rock band coming together from around the Northeast. The band puts forth a soulful blend of indie rock, country, folk, and Americana based music, influenced from an eclectic mix of artists ranging from songstresses such as Lucinda Williams and Aimee Mann to purveyors of the American indie scene such as The Decemberists. The band is fronted by Dar Maloney on guitar and lead vocals. Her hard-driving vocal style is often compared to that of Melissa Etheridge – and although she clearly has her own style, it’s something she takes as a true compliment. The Matchstick Architects play in and around New England and beyond in support of their new single 'Despicable You' and their forthcoming second album. The band is busy writing new music and is looking forward to recording its second full album, which promises to be a worthy follow-up to their debut effort. For those wishing to dig a little deeper… Dar Maloney and Tom Conklin formed The Matchstick Architects as a duo in 2010. With the idea of adding bandmates always a persistent desire, they played small venues and festivals for a couple of years and continued to write songs. Bassist DiDi Davis came along shortly thereafter. That was a stroke of luck. She was the perfect fit and she added the pulsating low end that they were desperately missing. From there, a search for the right drummer began. That search would prove to be a challenge. After going through several drummers that didn’t work out for one reason or another, they found Paul Unsworth. Paul was the final piece to finishing the band’s debut album. Over his professional career, Paul has played with legendary ex-Rolling Stones guitarist, Mick Taylor, and the legendary Ronnie Spector. Paul played drums on all the album tracks except for one - the soulful blues-rocker, Ready. Band friend and Arlo Guthrie drummer, Terry A La Berry, had already laid down the drum tracks for that one. The first single off the debut album, Little Things, enjoyed a steady rotation on The Exit 97.7 WEXT, a radio station based in Troy, NY which serves the greater Capital District of Albany, NY. The song also came in at #12 on the radio station's Top 60 Local 518 Songs of 2016. The albums second single, The Moment, also placed in the Top 60 in 2017. Paul Unsworth relocated his family and had to leave the band in 2015, once again leaving a hole in the line-up that has been hard to keep filled. Dave Willey entered the picture shortly thereafter and remained with the band until the fall of 2017. In March of 2018, Dennis Cotton agreed to come on board as the band’s permanent drummer. Dennis has recorded more than 40 albums, toured with legendary British blues band Savoy Brown for the better part of a decade (1999-2007), and has played with countless top artists including John Mayock, J. Geils, John Sebastian, Levon Helm, and a lot more. Now, he brings his world-class chops, experience, and musical sensibilities to The Matchstick Architects. On top of being an amazing drummer, Dennis is a perfect personality fit and a long-sought-after breath of fresh air. The Matchstick Architects have been fortunate to have had the opportunity to be on the same ticket as some incredible acts. In August of 2017, the band got to play at the Hudson Summerfest in Hudson, NY in support of the legendary NRBQ. In September of 2017, they played at the Birds of a Feather Music and Nature Festival in Grafton, NY in support of singer/songwriter, Sean Rowe. The band is playing dates while also working on their forthcoming second album.

BOOM TV – Sarah Kohrs

The Berkshire Org. for Original Music brings you this studio show featuring some of the region's best talents! Born and raised in Brainard, NY – a small hamlet near the Berkshires of Western Massachusetts – Sarah Kohrs is a talented musician and prolific songwriter. Her thoughtful compositions have a pop flare and bring to mind the work of Joni Mitchell or Stephen Sondheim. Sarah began singing at the age of four and studying classical piano at seven. Scholarships led her to the Eastman School of Music, where she encountered jazz players who happily introduced her to styles of music she'd never studied. She fell in love with the new styles and soon found herself a regular at Java’s coffeehouse, the local hotspot for improvisational jazz. After graduating from Eastman, Sarah earned a law degree at Georgetown University Law Center. She moved to Boston where she spent her days working as an attorney and her nights writing and recording pop songs. In 2010, while traveling through Greece, Sarah was infected by a parasite. The parasitic infection was so debilitating that Sarah had to leave her job in Boston and return to her hometown of Brainard. As she recovered, she began working part time at a small law firm in Great Barrington, MA and slowly returned to performing music. One night while playing at an open-mic session, Sarah met Mark Tuomenoksa, a local musician, arranger and composer who was so impressed by her songs that he believed them to be lesser-known covers of some famous artist, saying, \"They're too good to have been written by someone from around here.\" The two soon became friends and collaborators, writing, recording and performing together. Since then, Sarah’s catalogue of original songs has grown into the hundreds. Her style has blossomed into something reminiscent of Joni, but with a jazz edge and the country flare of her roots in rural New York. Sarah has performed locally as well as in New York; Asheville, NC; Baton Rouge, LA; and New Orleans.
